The Complete Gym Hygiene Audit Checklist

Think your gym is clean? Walk through it with this checklist and find out. We use a version of this during our professional hygiene audits — here's a simplified version you can use right now.

Entrance & Reception

  • [ ] Front glass doors and windows are streak-free
  • [ ] Reception desk is clear and sanitised
  • [ ] Floor mats are clean and positioned correctly
  • [ ] No visible dust on shelving, displays, or signage
  • [ ] Bins are empty and lined

    • Main Gym Floor

  • [ ] Floors are mopped and free of debris
  • [ ] No sticky spots or residue on flooring
  • [ ] Equipment surfaces are visibly clean (no sweat marks, chalk dust)
  • [ ] Cardio machine consoles and handles are sanitised
  • [ ] Free weight racks are organised and wiped
  • [ ] Bench pads show no staining or residue
  • [ ] Mirror surfaces are streak-free
  • [ ] Cable machine handles are clean
  • [ ] Fan blades and air vents are dust-free

    • Changerooms & Bathrooms

  • [ ] Toilet bowls and urinals are sanitised
  • [ ] Sinks and taps are clean and free of water spots
  • [ ] Mirrors are streak-free
  • [ ] Shower floors show no mould or soap buildup
  • [ ] Grout lines are clean and free of discolouration
  • [ ] Drains are clear and odour-free
  • [ ] Bench surfaces are clean (including undersides)
  • [ ] Lockers are wiped internally and externally
  • [ ] Dispensers (soap, paper, sanitiser) are full
  • [ ] Bins are empty and clean

    • Sauna / Steam Room

  • [ ] Bench surfaces are sanitised
  • [ ] No mould visible on walls or ceiling
  • [ ] Drain is clear
  • [ ] Door handle and glass are clean
  • [ ] Ventilation is functioning

    • How to Score Yourself

  • 90-100%: Excellent — your standards are high
  • 70-89%: Average — members notice the gaps
  • Below 70%: At risk — complaints and cancellations are likely
